Urban Plunge

Abstract: The Urban Plunge project is a 20-hour mission trip into downtown Spokane where participants meet homeless and formerly homeless people on their own turf: in a shelter, around a camp-site, or at their low-income housing establishment. By listening to the stories of the people they meet, the participants are introduced to homelessness in a personal way that opens their eyes and hearts to the people around them. Spending the night in a shelter and taking meals alongside the needy, participants experience firsthand what it’s like to be served as a person in need. They establish relationships with people they might not have been comfortable approaching before, and as a result, the community as a whole is strengthened. Urban Plunge has impacted the life of every person who has participated, as well as empowering the homeless who host the participants. Some participants have established their own ministry to the homeless as a result of their experience. Others have returned to volunteer regularly at the shelter. By engaging and connecting the rich and the poor, The Urban Plunge demystifies the culture of poverty and homelessness.
