The Children's Home of Poughkeepsie, Poughkeepsie, NY

A Novel and Creative Approach to Family Reunification

Abstract: The Children's Home of Poughkeepsie is a community-based, non-profit agency dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk children and their families in the Hudson River Region.” More and more, counties within New York State are encouraging community-based services as an alternative to residential care. The Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie has addressed their need to evolve with the current economic trends in social services and has established a new Agency Boarding Home (ABH) for a family unit. This ABH provides consistent care for the youth while allowing the parent to significantly re-integrate into their children’s lives. This innovative intervention was implemented quickly in response to the needs of a family of one biological child and 6 adopted children and their mother whom had been terrorized by a violent and abusive father for over 10 years. The home leased and renovated a house for the occupancy of this family. These efforts were guided by attachment and trauma research that has demonstrated that effects of trauma are best ameliorated when children retain the support of primary attachment figures, and their surrounding community and normal routines such as return to school are reestablished as quickly as possible (Masten and Osofsky, 2010).
