REStArT

Abstract: In 2006, the Allendale Association began working with Dr. Bruce Wampold, a leader in the critical analysis of effective treatment, to assess the agency’s residential program. Although the program was characterized by anecdotal evidence of positive outcomes, and the agency’s model compared favorably to characteristics found in existing research, Allendale began a process of self-assessment in which we looked critically at cases with unsuccessful outcomes. We found that these cases were characterized by a lack of alignment with families and clients about treatment goals, insufficientwithin-agency communication, and difficulty accessing family services. Our observations led to the dismantling of traditional family services and the development of a new clinical consultation approach to working with families called the Relational Re-Enactment Systems Approach to Treatment (REStArT). The REStArT program was first implemented in 2007 following the agency’s self-assessment.

Since the model’s implementation, the proportion of positive discharges from Allendale’s residential program has increased (from 69.9% in FY07 to 81.7% in FY10). The proportion of discharges to the client’s home compared to other positive discharges increased significantly (from 29.3% to 44.9%). This significant change remained when comparing the proportion of discharges to home to all other discharges, both positive and negative (20.5% in FY07 and 36.7% in FY10). The proportion of runaway discharges was cut in half (16.9% and 8.3%). These results support the one of the explicit goals of the REStArT model: to develop an alliance betweenclients and their families.
