Lorain County Children’s Services, Elyria, OH

School Success

Abstract: Since its inception in 2001, Lorain County Children Services’ School Success Program has helped assure educational excellence for participating children.  Much study and literature points out that children living in foster care fare significantly less well academically than their peers. Many factors account for this academic disparity, including instability, a lack of focus or emphasis on school success, possible delays in enrollment once the agency is involved, delays that occur if a child moves to a new home or transfers to a new school.

Lorain County Children Services developed an innovative program that is designed to improve the academic success of participating children as measured by growth and progress in grade point averages and standardized test results. Lorain County Children Services’ School Success Program has been accepted by all of the school districts in the county and has actively cultivated the necessary relationships with and between agency staff, contracted tutors, and school administrators and staff.

Although it began as an academic resource to children in foster care, the program expanded to all children involved with Lorain County Children Services. Tutors are required to be certified teachers and work with each child, in the child’s home, between 2-4 hours per week. The program has been formally evaluated by an external researcher and indeed the mean Grade Point average of children participating in School Success has increased from 1.87 to 2.35.
