Hillside Family of Agencies, Rochester, NY

Family Finding Curriculum Development

Abstract: Family Finding, a set of strategies used to find life-long supports for children and youth in foster care was developed by Kevin Campbell over the past two decades. Kevin Campbell is an internationally recognized youth permanency expert who has written numerous articles on family finding and permanency and has provided technical assistance throughout the United States.  Hillside Family of Agencies, located in up-state New York, brought Kevin Campbell to Hillside to train our staff in the Family Finding model.  Despite the proven effectiveness of Family Finding, we learned that no formal curriculum for teaching workers how to implement Family Finding existed.  Hillside Family of Agencies worked in partnership with Kevin Campbell over the past year to develop a formalized Family Finding training curriculum to train workers in the six step Family Finding model.  This six-day training program teaches workers the skills they need in order to implement Family Finding.  The curriculum is a learn-by-doing training, with each trainee selecting a youth to work with throughout the course of the training, working on each step of the Family Finding process with the youth as the staff member learns the model.  Each trainee receives a Family Finding participant manual and a Family Finding Fidelity Checklist to guide his/her Family Finding work.  This Family Finding curriculum has been used to train 300 workers over the past six months in the Family Finding model, helping youth achieve permanency.
